Parkland School Division, Alberta- Stony Plain

School Wellness Teams within Parkland School Division assessed the need for more consistent on-going physical activity in their school communities, in particular during their allotted ‘activity’ breaks such as recess. The aim of Recess Guardians is to teach elementary school children how to enjoy physical activity together in constructive ways at recess. Recess Guardians provides children in grades 4 – 6 with the tools necessary to lead other students in games at recess time with a positive behavior and attitude.

Parkland School Division has partnered with Recess Guardians to coordinate district-wide training of the program in 12 schools. Approximately 300 students will learn the skills necessary to become a recess guardian and engage younger students in games and other physical activities daily throughout the school year.
